I'm dreaming of a white Christmas...

30 Nov 2011

It’s that time of year again. If I were in the States right now, I’d expect there to be a nice layer of snow covering the ground. The trees would be bare of leaves—instead, they’d be covered in a glistening of snow and ice.

Here in Alicante, the weather is much the same as it’s been all fall—hovering around 65 degrees. It’s gorgeous—don’t get me wrong. But it never gets cold enough for it to actually snow. In a way, I miss the fact that I won’t be able to sit inside with a cup of hot chocolate watching the snow fall. Or make a snowman with my friends or my sisters. Watch students ice-skate on the Bald Spot. Make peppermint bark with my mom. The list goes on and on.

In light of this nostalgia for a traditional Midwest winter, I decided to channel my energy to teaching my students about what winter is like where I live.

I showed them pictures of my sister making a snowman, me sledding, my family shoveling snow, me ice-skating, random people ice-fishing, and my sisters engaging in a snowball fight.

The kids were delighted! After seeing the initial pictures, they asked how students got to school. I explained that there are actually days in which there isn’t school because of the snow. They all oh-ed and ah-ed.

They laughed at my ice-skating picture—especially when I explained that the day the photo was taken I fell down twice.

In spite of this nostalgia, I’m actually really excited to be spending the winter here! There are PLENTY of things I won’t miss about winter in the Midwest. First and foremost, wearing long underwear to survive when it gets to be -20 degrees F. You know, when they close the public school because it’s too cold, however, the college sends out an email to tell you that you could get frostbite if you are outside for more than 5 minutes, but please be sure to make it to class on time. There is also spending a couple hours shoveling nearly two feet of snow—just so you can get out of your house and make it to the garage where the snow blower is. Nope. Not going to miss that!
